The delegation chosen by the Chin National Front (CNF) to meet with state-level government officials from Chin State for upcoming peace talks left for Hakha, the capital of Chin state, Burma, from the Indo- Burma border today at around 11 am (Indian standard time). Khonumthung News has learned the Chin people will warmly welcome the 10-member CNF delegation. “We want to meet the CNF delegation, which we have not met in the last 20 years. The state government has invited the delegation formally, so, we thank the government,” a village elder from Chin State said.
The CNF delegation was picked up from the Indo- Burma border by Pastor Dr. Lal Uk, Chariman of the Peace and Tranquility Committee and Mr. Van Chan Ceu, leader of a youth group.
“Peace talks were agreed upon at the state level because it is an attempt to resolve the deeply rooted conflict with ethnic armed groups lasting for over 60 years and establish peace in the country,” according to Dr. Salai Ngun Cung Lian, a CNF spokesperson.
Although some Chin people are confused about the peace talks, wondering whether it would mean surrender, which will be tantamount to capitulating to the government, Dr. Salai said people should understand that it is not surrender. The 10 members of the CNF delegation include Dr. Sui Khar, Joint Secretary General and leader of the peace delegation, Mr. HC. Ral Hnin, second leader, Dr. Salai Ngun Cung Lian, Brigadier General Solomon, Mr. Thetni, Mr. Rokhawma, Mr. Hla Htun, Mr. Ngai Cia Thang, Salai Peter Lian and Mr. Khin Maung Lay.
The state government delegation is comprised of Mr. Win Htun, Mr. Aung Taung, Mr. Aung Min and Colonel Zaw Min Oo, Minister of Border and Security, who will lead the talks, which are scheduled for January 5th and 6th. Delegations of the central government will attend as observers in Hakha.
