Six Burmese soldiers on security duty were killed on the evening of November 15 when a landmine exploded. This took place at the Irrawaddy river bridge in Kachin State that connects Myitkyina with Waingmaw.

The explosion occurred at the bridge gate on the Waingmaw side and the sound was heard by residents in two nearby towns, said residents.

A KIA officer on the China-Burma border claimed responsibility for triggering the device.

This is the first time that government troops have been attacked at this bridge, also known as Balaminhtin.

Fresh government troops have been deployed at the bridge entrance gates on both the Waingmaw and Myitkyina sides ever since fighting with the KIA began anew on June 9, according to residents in the area.
