Paletwa: Four people from Paletwa Township in western Burma's Chin State were arrested on Monday by police for distributing some anti-referendum posters and pamphlets in the area, said a source from the area.
The detained have been identified as: U Kho Take, son of U Hwe Lu from Laytay Village; U Hla Tun Aung, son of U Kan Pa from Kinwa Village; U Aung Be, son of Nin Chat from Saluwa Village; and U Hwe Lan, son of U Pe How from Latay Village. All the villages are located in Paletwa Township in southern Chin State.
The quartet were arrested from Chin Let Wa Village in northern Paletwa Township soon after they arrived in the village with some posters and pamphlets against the referendum, a local source said.
The source confirmed that the seized posters and pamphlets were anti-referendum, but could not confirm what exactly was written.
The arrested protesters are currently being interrogated by the police at Chin Let Wa police station as they investigate who is involved and behind the activities.
The military authorities have tightened security in western Burma along the Indian and Bangladesh borders to prevent opposition activity against the ensuing referendum.
