The Burmese military junta in order to woo voters for the ensuing referendum to approve the constitution on May 10 has been mobilising residents in Myitkyina, the capital of Kachin State by giving clothes and money, a resident said.
U San Taung, director general of the Rangoon customs office asked residents to gather in Manhkring quarter on April 30 at the Da-Mar-Yon (community hall for religious purposes).
He initially gave 300,000 kyats (est. US$ 268) and then gave clothes the next day to the people, a resident in Manhkring quarter said.
According to a resident, U San Taung asked the residents how they were preparing for the referendum. A monk replied that they would stand on the right side.
The authorities have distributed ballot papers to residents in Manhkring but some included in the voter's list didn't get them, a resident added.
Last Sunday, the Burmese military regime held a meeting with Manhkring' residents and demonstrated to them on how to cast votes in the referendum.
