Unregistered refugees face for fear of arrest and harassment

Ukhiya, Bangladesh: Some unregistered refugees of Kutupalong makeshift camp have been facing for fear of arrest and harassment by official camp police personnel since last September 2011, said a refugee from the camp.

“Janal, the police In-Charge (IC) of official camp and police personnel Nasir summoned some refugees with allegation of involving in various cases since September 11.”

“The police officer demanded the called refugees to give money 5,000 to 10,000 for their release from their alleged case.”

“The summoned unregistered refugees are avoiding to face the police personnel as they are not able to fulfill the demanded of police officer.”

“Some escaped refugees who left from the camp are: Mohamed Alam (37), Mohamed Younus (20), Mohamed Rafique (40), Abdul Hafez (35), Fazal (45), Edris (40), Mohamed Rahim (30) and etc,” said refugee elder from the camp.

“Where will we get the demanded money? We don’t get any support from any quarter,” asked the police officer who was summoned.

Janal, the police In-Charge and police personnel Nasir go to makeshift camp and arrest innocent refugees with false allegations. They also extort money from the refugees, said another refugee on condition of anonymity.

“My family members live in the Kutupalong makeshift camp and I can’t able to meet them for fear of police arrest,’ said a refugee who left from camp for fear of police arrest.

He also said that where we will go and where is our safe place if official camp police personnel harass the refugees with false allegation and harassment.
