Teknaf, Bangladesh: Nearly 200 people from Teknaf border are ready to go to Malaysia by sea route under the Maji (leader or Driver) of Nabi Hussain, a Burmese national who is living in Teknaf, according to sources.

Nabi Hussain hails from Akyab, the capital of Arakan State, Burma.Hundreds of people from Burma (Maungdaw, Buthidaung and Akyab) and Bangladesh (Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar and Chittagong) were sent to Malaysia by sea route with rickety boats since last two year. During this time, he has created relationship with some people of Shapuri Dip, Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar and Chittagong, said Habib from Teknaf.

“At present, he lives at Auliabad village of Teknaf. He made good relation with local authorities such as police, BGB (Bangladesh Border Guard) and other authorities, so that the local people cannot dare to give complaint about his illegal work.”

Nabi Hussain came to Bangladesh with a fishing trawler from Burma and has been living in Shapuri Dip where he sent many people to Malaysia after organizing from border areas of both countries---Bangladesh and Burma. Now, he has organized 200 people who want to go to Malaysia and the Nabi Hussain Maji had already taken money from the organized people, and lives in hiding place because of avoiding arrest from concerned authorities, according to Rahamat Ullah from Shapuri Dip.

“Occasionally, he sent some people to Malaysia through Dalal (agent) of Cox’s Bazar, or Chittagong, some of them were arrested at Saint Martin of Bangladesh, Akyab (Burma), or Andaman Islands of India.”

Nabi Hussain will send the organized boat-people when the weather is favorable which will face the boat people trouble as before, said a local elder from Teknaf who prefers not to be named. “The concerned authority must take action against Nabi Hussain, otherwise the people will face same as 2009 in Thailand.”
