Despite the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak and mass deaths in Mon State, the coup Junta keeps the schools open.

Within few days, more than 1,000 people have infected COVID-19 and more than 40 died in the state.

Therefore, the Military Council declared Stay At Home in Mawlamyine, Thaton, and Thanbyuzayat Townships where is a high rate of infected cases.

Despite the rise of infection, all the basic schools in the state remain open, according to the officials of the Department of Education.

Only schools in townships, declared as Stay At Home, are temporarily closed, while schools in other townships are opened as usual, according to U San Aung, Mon State Education Officer.

"There is three Stay at Home townships in Mon State. These three townships have been temporarily closed under the direction of the State Council. In the other townships, if the Grade 10 class is related to the student who infected COVID-19, we close the class, but we keep the rest of classes open”, he said.

The continued opening of the schools could lead to the mass infection of COVID-19, according to the people who help COVID-19 affairs.

The parents of the students want the schools closed and are concerned that the current situation could lead to COVID-19 infection.

"All schools should be closed. There are several infected cases. The teachers and students are also infected in schools. The schools should have closed before, it is late now. Now, teachers and students are in the Isolation Ward."

At present, there are about 30 teachers and more than 40 students who have infected COVID-19 in schools in Mon State as of July 7.
