Chiang Mai (Mizzima) – Big business owners and business organizations have been invited to hear Burmese President Thein Sein discuss the economy and business policies in Naypyitaw on Wednesday, according to the Myanmar Industrial Development Committee.
The president invited businessmen and businesswomen to offer them suggestions and instructions, Khin Shwe, the chairman of the Myanmar Tourism Board told Mizzima.
“The main objective is that the president will give instructions about the national economy. He will give suggestions to them,” said Khin Shwe. “I think he has invited them because he has important things to say. I think he will explain the policies he wants to carry out.”
Fifty business organizations including Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Myanmar Construction Entrepreneurs Association and the Hotel and Tourism Association have been invited. Ten representatives of each organization, including chairmen and secretaries were invited to attend the meeting.
President Thein Sein also attended a “National Level Workshop on Rural Development and Poverty Alleviation” in Naypyitaw from May 20 to May 22. In the workshop, issues regarding small loans, farming, fisheries and the cooperative enterprise sector were discussed.
Regular parliamentary sessions that ended on March 31 will reopen on August 22. Khin Shwe said that an economic commission or committee would be formed prior to the second parliamentary session.
“The next session is near, so an economic commission or committee needs to be formed. By forming it, businessmen and relevant organizations can meet each other before important business is conducted,” Khin Shwe said.
On other issues, economist Khin Maung Nyo wrote on his Facebook page that President Thein Sein would deliver a public speech. Other sources said that it would be a speech regarding government policy before the second parliamentary session.
In other politial matters, the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) has prepared 100 questions to raise in the Parliament, according to sources close to the USDP. USDP General- Secretary Htay Oo is having a medical check-up in Singapore and will arrive back in Burma on Wednesday, according to a party source.
In Monday’s state-run newspapers, “The New Light of Myanmar” and “The Mirror,” there were no negative stories aimed at the exile media, which earlier said “The VOA and BBC are sowing hatred among the people; the RFA and DVB are generating public outrage.”
