Three assault rifles and ammunition were seized by Mizoram police from two Burmese nationals in Mizoram, northeast India on 10 August.
Three AK-56 assault rifles and three magazines were seized by state police, Central Intelligent Agencies and the 14thAssam Rifles in a joint raid in Thangkhanmunga resident of Bethel block, Champhai town, Mizoram.
The Mizoram daily newspaper reported that the arms smugglers were identified as Khaikhanlian (50) from Khawmawi village of Kalemyo, Sagaing division and Suitian (37). They were jailed in Champhai the same day.
It is suspected that the arms and ammunition were being smuggled for northeast rebel groups of India through Mizoram state.
The arms and ammunition is estimated to cost over Rs. 500,000 in the local market in Mizoram and its neighbouring states.
As a result, Burmese nationals staying in Mizoram and Indo-Burma border areas are under surveillance by Assam Rifle troops to prevent entry of smuggled goods. - Khonumthung News
