Chiang Mai (Mizzima) – Zin Lin, the vice chairman of the Thailand-based Burma Media Association (BMA), on Thursay joined the UN Correspondents Association (UNCA) in calling on UN Burma envoy Vijay Nambiar to hold a press conference at the UN in New York.
The request was made following reports that the Burmese regime censored Nambiar’s press conference held in Rangoon earlier this month.
The UNCA represents around 200 reporters ‘in dialogues with the UN secretariat to resolve problems, such as disagreements over security concerns and access to news sources’.
Exiled Burmese media reported last week that the Burmese government’s Press Scrutiny and Registration Division (PSRD) forbid Burmese media from printing statements made by Nambiar at the Rangoon airport press conference held May 13. Most local journalists were barred from attending a similar airport press conference held during a previous trip Nambiar made to Burma last November.
