Chiang Mai (Mizzima) – Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi has joined Time Magazine’s 2011 list of the 100 most influential people in the world.
Aung San Suu Kyi stands alongside activists such as China's Ai Weiwei and India's Aruna Roy, media headliners Julian Assange of Wikileaks, Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg and Justin Beiber, the teen pop idol.
Writing for Time, Wang Dan, a Chinese democracy activist, calls Suu Kyi an ‘Asian hero and global inspiration’.
Wang Dan notes her ‘commitment to nonviolent resistance’, and says, ‘Even after spending most of the past two decades in detention, Suu Kyi is determined to return to the front lines of the battle for democracy’.
