5 April 2011: A twenty-six year old Chin refugee woman was allegedly raped by Indian goons in New Delhi, the capital of India in the last week of March.

It is learnt that the woman arrived in New Delhi three months ago from Teddim township in Chin state, Burma to apply for refugee status to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugee (UNHCR).

Nine locals allegedly raped her, when she was sitting in the park alone near her residence around 2 pm on 26 March.

Mr. Mangpi, Secretary of the Chin Refugee Committee reported that an eyewitness informed her relative, who went searching for her. After an hour she was found in the park.

“She was asked for the details of the incident by the local people,” said Mr. Mangpi.
It is learnt that the woman is deaf and suffers from mental retardation. The incident was reported to the local authorities the same day.

“We reported the incident of rape to the local police. The woman has said she could identify the persons involved in the rape. The police summoned the accused to the police station, but the woman failed to identify them and said the persons called were not involved. So the police released them,” said Mr. Mangpi. It is not certain whether the woman and her family were threatened by the perpetrators.

The woman was admitted to hospital but doctors said there was no evidence of rape.
