Rangoon (Mizzima) – Water festival goers at this year’s celebrations of the Burmese New Year will have to pass through bomb detection machines, in an effort to avoid a repeat of the bomb blasts which killed 10 people and injured 170 last year.

MizzimaAuthorities have ordered each water festival pavilion in Rangoon to buy a bomb-detection machine to screen party-goers at the two-day event, which starts April 14. Last year, three bombs exploded during the celebrations. No group took credit for the attacks.

A Rangoon municipality official said that pavilion building permits would be issued next week.

Meanwhile, officials of the No. (1) Military Zone this week ordered express mail delivery services in Rangoon to buy bomb-detection machines to screen items before shipping.
