A Burmese Social Welfare Association (BSWA) group based in Mizoram northeast state of India is helping educates children of Burmese migrant workers in the state.
The sixth anniversary of (BSWA) group’s conference was held on January 8 at the Archive Hall in Zarkawt block in Aizawl city. The group elected its central committee members by voting. The members of the group then got together to provide financial assistance for Burmese migrant children.
The financial assistance of Rs. 450 each has been granted to 58 Burmese students from Standard I to X in Aizawl city.
The BSWA is known to help migrant workers from Burma. It started providing financial assistance for the education of migrant children since 2007. It has also been counseling and solving the problems faced by migrant workers daily.
“Most Burmese nationals here are migrant workers and are facing financial problems, but they try to educate their children to the best of their ability. We try to help these parents to provide some relief,” said Mr. Zaw Zaw, responsible for educational in the BSWA.
BSWA is a self-help group with no revenue coming from other groups. Therefore it cannot provide sufficient financial assistance for migrant children.
Despite its limitations, the parents are very grateful to the group. The group will try and provide educational assistance next year, he added.
The Burmese social group (BSWA) was established on 1 May, 2005 by Burmese Christian youths in Mizoram to better the lot of Burmese migrant workers in Mizoram. Today, there are about 1000 members in the group. – Khonumthung News.
