Over 10,000 people in the controlled areas of New Democratic Army-Kachin (NDA-K) in Northern Burma were recently issued different coloured temporary National Registration Documents (NRDs) by the Burmese ruling junta, NDA-K leaders said.

The three fold Green, Pink and White coloured national registration documents were issued to both civilians and men and women who are members of the  NDA-K, a week before Maj-Gen Ye Myint, Chief of Security Affairs visited the area on March 28. The cards were issued on the directives of Col. Maung Maung Than, Director General of Immigration and Population Ministry of the junta, said NDA-K's Pangwa Headquarter sources.

The different NRDs were issued to members of the NDA-K along with civilians in controlled areas. The NRDs for the NDA-K bore a circular seal whereas the NRDs for civilians had a triangular seal.

Local immigration officers of the junta said, the NRDs are being issued in keeping with the voters' list before the constitutional referendum in May and general elections in 2010.

During Maj-Gen Ye Myint's visit in NDA-K controlled areas in east Kachin State along the borders of China's Yunnan province, he met NDA-K leaders in Pangwa and also presented 150 sacks of milled rice along with some packets of salt, NDA-K leader Zahkung Ting Ying told KNG.

According to NDA-K leaders in Pangwa, Maj-Gen Ye Myint delivered a speech regarding the constitutional referendum in May to the NDA-K.

The NDA-K has not issued any statement on the referendum and it has no plans to suggest anything to the people in the controlled areas either to support or oppose the constitutional referendum in May, NDA-K Leader Ting Ying said.

The NDA-K signed a permanent ceasefire agreement with the Burmese ruling junta in 1989 and the organization is better known as a commercial organization rather than a political one.
