The Union of Myanmar Federation of National Politics (UMFNP) party members were intimidated during party work in Poung Kyo village in Shwe Taung Township, western Bago region on 26 August.

UMFNP’s group led by U Kyaw Kyaw Lwin were intimidated by members of the Swan Arr Shin group when they were issuing party membership cards to members, U Aye Lwin, chairman of UMFNP party, said.

Ko Ohn Thein, who lives in Poung Kyo village was the one, who was spearheading the intimidation and he was alleged to have snatched the membership cards being distributed by UMFNP members and thrown them away. He was in jail for various crimes in the past. Now he is a member of the village’s Swan Arr Shin group, U Aye Lwin said.

During the incident, Ko Ohn Thein started using his catapult into the crowd. UMFNP member Ko Aung Hlaing Win and team leader U Kyaw Kyaw Lwin and others were injured.

U Kyaw Kyaw Lwin was hurt on the ribs. Other villagers were also injured when they tries to resist him.

"We, politicians should not be intimidated. If the police go with us, people are afraid and don't come to us and if the police do not go with us, this kind of intimidation occurs. I think authorities have their responsibility to stop such incidents because the election is near. I want to urge the authorities to look into it," U Aye Lwin said.

The incident occurred at 9 pm on 26 August. UMFNP filed a case at Shwe Taung police station.

UEC allowed UMFNP party to register as a political party on April 22. UMFNP formed an alliance with the Myanmar Democracy Congress party and 88 Generation Student Youths (Union of Myanmar) on August 21.
