Two Burmese nationals were arrested with 350 boxes of Bangladeshi medicine and Burmese goods by Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) of Battalion No. 42 of Teknaf on August 28 while it was being smuggled to Burma, sources said.

Acting on a tip off, the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) seized Bangladeshi medicine from a border point of Teknaf.

The arrested were identified as Aman Ullah (20), son of Sultan Ahamed and Zamal Hussain (25), son of Abdul Amin from Maungdaw Township, Arakan State, Burma.

A row boat was also seized by the BDR with Burmese goods from Dum Dum Meah border point the same day while entering Bangladesh illegally.

Among the seized goods were Burmese Tami, longyi, Sonaka (Makup) worth Taka over 50,000, an official source said.

The same day, BDR also seized 398 kilograms of urea fertilizer from the Nila border point while it was being smuggled to Burma, he added.

Meanwhile, police personnel from Cox’s Bazaar Modern police station arrested a Bangladeshi peddler with 1000 Yaba tablets worth nearly Taka 700,000 from Cox’s Bazaar on August 29 in a raid. The arrested Helal Uddin (20) belongs to Rangikhali under Teknaf upazila. He tried to take the Yaba tablets to Dhaka in a vehicle, said a close aide of BDR.

A local trader from Tekanf said that most smuggled goods have been available from the beginning of Ramadan or fasting month. There has also been an increase in arrest of smugglers by BDR on the Bangla-Burma border. The security on the border has been tightened.
