The announcement by the Burmese military junta that general elections will be held on November 7 is to animate the junta’s controversial 2008 constitution. It significantly fails to meet the aspirations of ethnic leaders and opposition groups. So, the election cannot be recognized, said the Karenni National Community of Canada (KNCC).

Khon Myo Minlatt, a spokesperson of KNCC said, "No meeting with political groups and no building peace in regions means the junta could not bring Burmese people into a better life. Burma’s 2010 electoral framework fundamentally will be neither free nor fair, therefore, we will not recognize it."

The KNCC's statement yesterday said that instead of trying to seek a political solution through meaningful dialogue with all stakeholders in the nation, the State Peace and development Council (SPDC) has continually harassed political opponents and committed gross human rights violations with all kind of atrocities.

On the composition of the regime’s electoral commission, the Karenni organization criticized the Union Election Commission (EC) announcement of the date of Burma's election, the first in 20 years, as lacking independence as well as guarantee of a government based on the will of the people, basic human rights, freedom to stand for election and reconciliation with ethnic leaders. It is not an impartial election administration.

"There is no reason to disbelieve that the elections as currently designed by the Burmese military regime is to further entrench the military in power. To be a legitimate government is on international standard's decision and it is clear that the SPDC attempts legitimacy," said Sunshine, a chairman of Karenni National Youth Organization.

Meanwhile, a high-profile American organization and a US electoral watchdog lambasted Burma’s planned elections as presently structured, as it significantly fails to meet criteria affording international legitimacy.

KNCC is an organization, which closely watches the Karenni cease fire groups and is into research on Karenni state.
