Burma’s border security force - Nasaka called village elders, Village Peace and Development Council (VPDC) members, businessmen and their henchmen to the Nasaka camp on March 14 to clarify the recently announced electoral laws, according to a businessman who attended the meeting.
They also called owners of shrimp projects, crab projects, fish culture projects and ferry boat owners and others. The villagers were called in the morning to the Nasaka camp and the meeting was completed at around 5 pm.
They were called by the local Nasaka camps in Maungdaw Township to clarify the recently declared electoral laws and seek the villagers’ views on the laws.
In the meeting, the Nasaka authorities asked the villagers to be vigilant for peace in villages and the township and to inform concerned authorities, if they see any stranger in the village. They also asked the villagers to send messages as early as possible to the Nasaka if robbers enter the village. Villagers have to protect their own village, said a local elder who went to the meeting.
They also said that nationwide elections will be held soon and that the villagers have to support the National United Party (NUP) representatives. Some of the NUP members will go to every village to mobilize support of the villagers.
Recently, three Nasaka personnel were deployed in each Rohingya village to prevent robberies in Nasaka area No. 5, which has 22 villages in Maungdaw Township. The deployed Nasaka live in Rayaka (VPDC) office and the villagers have to take the responsibility of their food. At night, the Nasaka go to every house and check the family list, group photographs, guest lists, and loot valuables from the villagers, said a local schoolmaster who preferred not to be named.
A village elder said, “Robberies committed in villages by unknown persons are mostly by Nasaka personnel or policemen.”
At present, the Nasaka are deployed in the following villages - Ngar Khu Ya, Pawet Chaung, Sali Pyin, Zambonia, Lone Don, Khadir Bill, Naing Chaung, Lu Dine, Auk Pruma, Atta Pruma, Rameah Taung, Kya Ghon Taung, Kratru Pyin, Nga Sakru, Oo Shein Kya and seven other villages, said a villager.
