In a blatant attempt at fleecing people the immigration department of Tawnzang township, Chin state has demanded Kyat 1 lakh for registration called ‘Pungsan Tase’ in local parlance, for those going abroad or resettling in other places, locals alleged.
“They are demanding Kyat 1 lakh for registration (Pungsan Tase), which is required for applying for a permit to go to other countries,” said a person who applied.
At least 200 persons go abroad to work from Tawnzang Township every year, it is learnt.
Similarly, the authorities demand Kyat 20,000 to 30,000 from those who need registration for shifting from one place to another in the country.
Government officials take Kyat 1500 for issuing National Identity Cards and Kyat 3000 for immigration registration. Although some officials demand illegal and excessive money, there is no action against this.
“It is correct. We demand money as other departments do. They demand Kyat 10,000 for only a block recommendation letter!” retorted an employee of the immigration department.
According to local people taking large amounts illegally for immigration registration is in evidence in other places in Chin state as well. In Chin state over 1000 persons seek registration each day. – Khonumthung News.
