The Mizoram state government has requested Indian Central government officials to urge authorities in Burma to improve the Indo-Myanmar border road No. 2 from Rih village to Zokhawthar village. The talks took place on 10 November in Aizawl city, northeast state, India.
The Mizoram daily newspaper Vanglaini said that Mr. Lalrinliana Sailo, Minister of Trade & Commerce, Mizoram and central representatives visited the Indo-Myanmar border trade zone no. 2 and met leaders of the Champhai Syndicate to improve the Indo-Myanmar border trade road No. 2.
They mainly focused on the Indo-Myanmar trade road Kaley via Tiau border road as it is used mainly to transport goods from Burma to Mizoram state. The road is in a terrible condition making it very difficult to negotiate by traders. Therefore, the officials will meet Burmese authorities very soon.
It is learnt that the traders use the Rih-Zokhawthar, Indo-Myanmar border trade No. 2 route more than the More-Tamu Indo-Myanmar trade road. The probable reason is that there are many insurgent groups in Manipur state, northeastern India who create trouble for traders. So the Indian government has to concentrate on the Indo-Myanmar border trade road no. 2.
The central government of India plans to construct an Integrated Check Post (ICP) in Champhai town in order to improve border trade. It also proposes to set up telephone booths for the first time on the border trade no. 2 zone.
According to an interview with the minister Mr. Lalrinlian, by Khonumthung News early this month, he said, “We want to have a better interchangeable trading system and better relationship with Burma.”
The officials, who visited to Indo-Myanmar border trade no. 2 are Mr. Kanta Rao, Director, Ministry of Commerce & Industry in-charge of Myanmar, Mr. K R. Baruah, Commissioner (Customs) Shillong and Shri S.C. Sharma, Director, Ministry of DoNER, New Delhi.
