The Zomi National Congress (ZNC) in a statement said it will not participate in the 2010 general elections in Burma without the constitution being reviewed by the military junta.

“The military government functions in a way, which is against the system of democracy. The authorities have to review the constitution, which was amended without the consent of the people. Or else our party cannot participate in the forthcoming 2010 general elections,” secretary of ZNC (LA) Mr. Sit Naing told Khonumthung News.

The ZNC statement on 24 October said that the SPDC government of Burma has constantly violated democratic issues and human rights in the country despite pressure from the international community and has political prisoners for almost 21 years. At the moment the economic crisis is the worst than ever before in the country.

The referendum result was a sham where the so-called constitution was ostensibly supported by 92.48 percent of the people. The regime is trying to hold general elections in 2010, just to legitimize the so-called constitution.

It also added that the Zomi National Congress (ZNC) was established in 1988 and is still working with other political parties - the National League of Democracy led by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, Shan Nationalities League for Democracy led by Hkun Htoo Oo, Arakan League for Democracy led by the late Dr. Saw Mra Aung and Mon National Democratic Front led by Naing Tun Thein.

Now the Zomi National Congress (ZNC) party is being led by Mr. Pu Cin Sin Thang and they are ready to contest the forthcoming 2010 general elections if the military government reviews the constitution.

Two members of ZNC Mr. Ching Siang Thang and Tlang Tha Lian Pau had been elected as Members of Parliament in the constituency of Tonzang and Tidim townships, Chin state western Burma in the 1990 general election.
