Sa Ai Sue, KIC — Last Thursday officials from Karen's State's Kawkareik Township Election Commission began a five day training course for teachers from the area who will operate polling stations on election day. The township will have more than 90 polling booths in next month's election.

“The voting booth officer and the deputy officer are in charge of voting booths. We will only be able to release the correct vote count if they carry out their tasks quickly and accurately. That’s why we are teaching them personally,” said U San Kyi the Township Election Commission chairman.

U San Kyi added that the course will provide details on the voting process, the layout of voting booths, how to count ballots and other information related to the duties of polling station staff.
Teachers have been sent to attend this five-day voting course in order to help them serve as voting booth officers and deputy officers at polling stations during the election. The training which began last week will conclude on October 12th.

“I have been given the chance to serve as a voting booth officer during the election so I will fulfill my duty as a civil servant. I feel proud that I'm able to take part in the election of a new government that will develop the country,” said Daw Khin Kyu Aye, an elementary school headmaster who has been attending the training course. She is one of 186 teachers taking part in the course.

Beginning last month the Karen State Civil Society Network (KSCN), has been conducting teacher training courses on voter education across Karen State.
