Authorities in Mizoram state in northeast India arrested 50 Burmese nationals in capital Aizawl on July 30 and deported them to their country.
Among the arrested, 20 were working as weavers in Thakthing block and Kulikawn in Aizawl city. The other 30 were from Chin state in Burma and were working as casual laborers in Aizawl main market block. They were arrested under the Foreigners Act and pushed back from the Indo-Myanmar border.
"The reason for arresting foreigners is because the Mizoram CID seized many explosives and arms from the house of a Burmese citizen. The local authorities swooped down on a number of Burmese citizens arrested and deported them to Burma," a weaver in Aizawl said.
The Mizoram CID seized many weapons from the house of a Burmese citizen in Saron block, Aizawl on July 30, after which local authorities started arresting them.
This is the third time that Burmese nationals have been arrested in Aizawl city this year. There are about one lakh Burmese in Mizoram state, who fled their country, where they faced economic and political crisis and came to India.
Similarly, people from upper and southeastern Burma are fleeing to Thailand, Malaysia and the China border in search of jobs.
