Fake eggs made of chemicals and unknown substances have been imported to Myanmar and are on sale at the local markets in some border areas, the state run media “New Light of Myanmar” reported today. The fake eggs may harm the health of the consumers, warned the authorities.
The shopkeepers in the townships of Mu-Se, Myawaddy and Kawthaung are not aware of the problem and many of their customers buy and eat fake eggs.
“I carry the goods with truck from Thai to Myawaddy every day. I haven’t heard anything about fake eggs imported to the country”, a trader from Myawaddy said.
However, the residents living in the areas of Three Pagoda Pass and Mudon townships do know about the problem, but they still buy and eat eggs. It seems they don’t care too much whether they consummate real or fake eggs.
The fake eggs look exactly like the real ones. It’s very difficult to make a difference, according to people familiar with the problem. The white of the eggs is made of acid benzoic, jelly, unknown chemical powder, and chemical powder used in bakery.
An unknown yellow powder is mixed with a kind of liquid in order to obtain the yolk. The liquid is called Magic Water and contains calcium chloride.
The yolk and the white of the egg is poured into an oval shape plastic container. It has the same shape as a real egg. The Magic Water contains a kind of thin membrane which separates the yolk from the white. The egg shell is made of a mixture of paraffin wax and an unknown white chemical liquid. After the yolk and the white are covered by the shell, the egg has to be dried.
One way to discover whether an egg is real or fake is to shake it and to make it spin on the surface of a mirror or plate. If it spins faster that usual, then it is fake. The colour of the fake eggs is darker than the color of the real eggs. They are brighter as their shells are made of wax and they are rougher. The membrane which separates the white from the yolk melts if the eggs are boiled, “The New Light of Myanmar” informs.
The fake eggs do not have any nutritious qualities and they may harm your health due to the chemicals, medical experts from Burma stated.
The Burmese authorities warned the population to watch out and if fake eggs seller is spotted to be reported to the Town Development Committees in all regions.
