The National League for Democracy (NLD) officially nominated U Henry Van Thio for the position of Amyotha Hluttaw (Upper House) Vice-President on 10 March.

U Henry Van Thio (Age 58), a Chin national and former colonel, was elected to the Aymyotha Hluttaw as the Thantlang Township representative in the November 2015 general election.

He said: "Our party will take ethnic issues seriously and I will do my best for all ethnic people."

Previously, the NLD had selected U Sai Nyint Lwin, the secretary of the Chin National Democratic Party as a candidate for Amyotha Hluttaw Vice-President, before officially nominating U Henry Van Thio to the post.

The Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) has also nominated U Khin Aung Myin for the job of Amyotha Hluttaw Vice-President, but U Henry Van Thio is likely to get the job because the vice-president will be elected by the Amyotha Hluttaw where the NLD has a commanding majority.

The NLD also nominated U Thin Kyaw to be the Pyithu Hluttaw (lower house) vice-president, while the NLD nominated Dr. Sai Mauh Kham for the job.
