19 June 2009: Burmese goods will be imported to Mizoram state from tomorrow 20 June as the dispute between the Zokhawthar Welfare Committee (ZWC) and Champhai Transport Union (CTU) has been resolved. This was announced by the local authorities of the Indo-Myanmar border trade no. 2.

The dispute between the two groups was resolved by the Champhai District level NGO Joint Committee.  A letter of agreement has been drafted regarding the issue, which was published and highlighted in Mizoram daily newspaper Vanglaini on June 18.

According to the agreement, ZWC will transport all Burmese goods from the Indo-Myanmar border area to Zokhawthar village including loading and unloading of goods. The CTU group will transport goods from Zokhawthar village to Champhai town directly at Re. 1 per kilogram of goods. The earlier charge was Rs 2.50 had which has been scaled down.

The Indo-Myanmar border trade no. 2 is being used by about 100 traders from Myanmar. They were importing Chinese products like clothes, home appliances and food items. The goods can be imported to Mizoarm state again after suspension of activities for more than a month and traders are happy.

Although the Mizoram authorities have given permission to import Burmese goods, pigs are not being allowed from any neighboring countries. The Mizoram government has banned import of pigs from other Indian states like Tripura, Manipur and Assam or other countries such as Bangladesh and Burma in order to prevent Swine flu (H1N1) recognized as world epidemic by the World Health Organization.
