New Delhi (Mizzima) - British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has posted a message on a new website launched Wednesday calling for the release of detained Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

64forsuu.org is a website calling for the release of Nobel Peace Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi and aiming to collect as many supporting messages as possible from around the world to send to her on her 64th birthday on June 19th.

“I add my voice to the growing chorus of those demanding your release. For too long the world has failed to act in the face of this intolerable injustice. That is now changing. The clamour for your release is growing across Europe, Asia, and the entire world. We must do all we can to make this Birthday the last you spend without your freedom,” Brown said in his message.

The British Premier’s message along with the messages of several other prominent personalities, including famous soccer player David Beckham, Daniel Craig, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Vaclav Havel and film superstar George Clooney, appeared as the website was launched on Wednesday.

Supporting the website are campaign groups such as Burma Campaign UK, Amnesty International, Christian Solidarity Worldwide, Open Society Institute, Avaaz, the Trade Union Congress, English Pen, Human Rights Watch and Not On Our Watch.

Aung San Suu Kyi, who is currently facing a trial in a court in Rangoon’s Insein Prison, will turn 64 on June 19th. She has spent more than 13 of the past 19 years under house arrest.

She is facing trial for charges of breaching her detention law by accepting an uninvited American man into her home, who allegedly swam across Inya Lake and entered into her compound.
