The Town Peace and Development Council of Falam Township, has been collecting donations from civilians for their own group in Chin state, Burma .

A local person said that they had started collecting from 96 tracts of Falam Township and had already demanded Kyat 5000 to Kyat 10,000 from each village. The order had been passed by TPDC Chairman, Zaw Win Htay.

“They have fixed the amount of the donation from each village based on the number of houses. If a village has many houses they collect more donation than a village with fewer houses,” he added.

In fact, the people in a block collect donations from each family in order to get the requisite amount of money, which then has to be submitted to the TPDC.

Meanwhile, though this collection is being conducted in the villages of Falam Township , no such action has been witnessed in the town.

“TPDC is afraid of collecting donations in the town, therefore they always collect such donations or funds from the villagers,” a local person told Khonumthung News.

Chin people in the western part of Burma , are facing a severe famine, which follows soon after bamboo flowering and are struggling for their livelihood. In the mean time, they are also facing other pressure from authorities, like forced labour, high taxes and donations.

It is for these reasons that most of the youth have gone to neighboring countries, in order to look after their families. Indeed, a report claims that there are very few youngsters remaining in Chin state during summer.
