The Mizoram police arrested a Burmese in possession of five rounds of ammunition on 21 March 2009 from Zemabawk, Aizawl city, Mizoram state, India .

According to Mizoram newspapers the Indo-Myanmar border bus service was checked at the entrance of the Forest Check gate of Aizawl city by Mizoram police because it had information that arms and ammunition were being smuggled by bus. The police arrested Kapchianpau (43) son of H. Khama of Tedim , Burma and seized 40 mm high explosive shells and three rifle grenades.

Kapchianpau was given Rs. 1000 each for carrying these from the Indo-Myanmar border to Aizawl city, Mizoram state.. Soon after the police arrested the owner C. Zachhuma of Kanan block, Champhai District, who lived in Burma earlier. The next day two persons Albert D. Muanga (33) and Thangsuanliana (30), who were also involved, were arrested on March 22.

The first two persons have been jailed for illegal arms smuggling and the other two are detained in Champhai police station for investigation.

The shell and the ammunition were brought from Burma . The bullets were for M-16 rifle used by the US Army.

Although the Home Minister of Mizoram had threatened to deport Burmese into criminal activity, there is no further information in this regard. Interestingly, the accused persons have Voter’s ID cards of Mizoram state, India and other documents.

Some Burmese people are into criminal activities for money because they are struggling to survive given the economic crisis in Burma .
