Chiang Mai - Authorities in Burma's southern Shan state have tightened security in fear that bombs may be planted as residents in the state's capital city of Taunggyi prepare to celebrate a popular festival known as Thasaungdine.

A local youth in Taunggyi said he was questioned by security officials who checked his national identity card and searched his bags, pockets and body, as he approached the main festival area where hot air balloons were being prepared to be released.

"The police and soldiers are everywhere, and will check anybody going near the main festival place," the local resident told Mizzima.

Residents of Taunggyi, the capital of Shan state, are reportedly in a festive mood to celebrate Thasaungdine, a Buddhist festival where devotees collectively offer special gifts and offerings to monks. The festival also includes the releasing of hot air balloons.

The festival is particularly popular in Taunggyi, annually attracting people from across the country.

"In past years, we never had such security and it was always peaceful," the local added.

He, along with other festival goers, believes authorities have stepped-up security measures because of the increasing number of bomb blasts across the country in recent months.

In Rangoon, at least two blasts occurred last month, killing at least one person.
