A government-appointed village chairman in Maungdaw Township attacked a Nasaka Corporal with a sword when he attempted to rape his daughter at night, said a colleague.

The chairman was identified as U Habisular from Kan Bu Village under the Ali Thankyaw Village Tract in southern Maungdaw Township.

On October 20 night Nasaka Corporal Zaw Win Aung entered the chairman's house and attempted to rape his daughter. The chairman grabbed a sword and hacked at the corporal several times.

Corporal Zaw Win Aung luckily managed to survive and is now hospitalized in Maungdaw.

After the incident, Chairman U Habisular fled to Bangladesh for fear of retaliation by Nasaka officers.

According to a family source, Habisular's family members were taken to Nasaka headquarters for interrogation.

"Habisular's family members will have to pay a large amount of money as bribe to Nasaka officials for their release. If they don't pay they will face severe punishment," the relative said,\.
