Teknaf, Bangladesh: Bangladeshi teak is being smuggled to various places as Burmese timber by smugglers through Teknaf land port, said a trader in Teknaf.
There is a group operating on the border who smuggle Bangladeshi teak in the name of Burmese timber during Eid-ul-Fiter. Every day, they send Bangladeshi teak from Teknaf land port.
There is a nexus between smugglers some forest department staff and some businessmen in the entire operation.
According to sources, earlier Burmese timber was brought to Bangladesh from Burma through the Teknaf land port and thousands of tones of Bangladeshi teak were sent from Teknaf land port mixed with Burmese timber.
When it came to be known Bangladesh authorities tried to stop the smuggling of Bangladeshi teak.
However, Bangladeshi teak is still being smuggled, said a local.
