Incessant heavy rain has blocked the Stilwell Road between Washong (Washawng) village in Waingmaw Township and Sadung (Sadon) areas in eastern Kachin State bordering China's Yunnan Province. Two people have died in landslides. The blockade has seriously inconvenienced locals, sources said.
The Stilwell Road also called Ledo Road has been blocked since last week because part of the hillside collapsed due to heavy rain. The landslide is continuing, an eyewitness told KNG.
"Seven or eight places have been blocked along the road and two people died when the hill side came down on the road," said a government servant, who came back recently from Sadon.
"Because the road is blocked, I can't go back to Sadon. Now all transportation to the Sadon and Kambaiti areas has come to a halt," he added.
The reconstruction of Stilwell Road was completed by China on April 26, 2007 following an agreement with the Burmese ruling junta. However, the Chinese have transferred all the responsibilities in terms of maintenance of the road to the Burmese authorities, a local said.
There has not been any repair if the road by the Burmese authorities, a local added.
