The Burmese ruling junta authorities in Kachin State, northern Burma have been checking out guests in hotels and making arbitrary arrests of people they suspect. This exercise is not only being conducted in hotels but also on the streets since last week, a source said.

The operation was launched by the No. (1) Police Station in Myitkyina, the capital of Kachin State. The police have been checking the hotels which have not reported overnight guests to the authorities, a source close to the police told KNG.

The police searched especially hotels which allow prostitution. If they find prostitutes in the hotel, they are being arrested and charged, he added.

"From the hotels the police are arresting guests whether they are prostitutes or not and are taking them away to the police station. They are being charged and detained for a night in the police station. If they are not prostitutes, they are release later," he said.

The police also arrested suspected couples who have been dating in the dark or on the street at night, said a resident.

Meanwhile, many restrictions have been imposed in the town. The people have been doing their work as usual while the authorities ordered closing of shops before midnight, a resident added.
