Twelve Men Sentenced for Arson in Thandwe

Twelve men were sentenced to two years imprisonment with hard labour for burning down 39 houses in Thabyu-Chai Village, Thandwe Township, Arakan State on 1st October 2013.

They were convicted under section 436/34 on 28th January at Thandwe Judicial Court according to a police officer from Thandwe Police Station.

The men are: Moe Kyaw Thu, Maung Maung Aye, Zaw Myo Thet, Zaw Min Oo, Kyaw Kyaw Naing, Kyaw Kyaw, Aung Aung, Tin Hla, Nay Myo Kyaw, Zaw Myo Lwin, Kyaw Gyi (aka) Kyaw Tun Khaing and Japan (aka) Nyi Lin Tun.

The 39 houses were burnt down as part of sectarian violence that took place in Thabyu-Chai village. The cost of the damage caused was estimated to be 1.95 million kyats.

Nyunt Khin and Khin Maung Lwin were freed by the court under section 403(1) due to lack of evidence.

The case against the men was bought by U Tun Khaing the administrator of Lower Nat-Maw Village-Tract.
