The Myanmar Peace Center (MPC) is hoping that the Single Text could be completed in December said senior advisor U Hla Maung Shwe. Finalizing the document between the Union-level Peace Working Committee (UPWC) and Nationwide Ceasefire Coordination Team (NCCT) will likely pave the way for nationwide ceasefire agreement (NCA) to be inked.
Recently the MPC informally met with NCCT leaders in northern Thai city Chiang Mai. After U Hla Maung Shwe told IMNA he would like “points” that could be “blocking discussions” to be worked out in the next NCA meeting, which should happen before the next year.
Minister U Aung Min wanted to meet in the first week of December, but this can’t happen until the NCCT met amongst themselves, said NCCT deputy leader Nai Hong Sor, remarking that despite the disruption caused the recent government attack on Kachin Independence Organization’s training center in Laiza, the NCCT has shown it’s still committed to future discussions by participating in the recent meeting with MPC.
NCCT executive member Khun Okkar told BBC that during the meeting “U Aung Min side brought many positive points. But all these points are already accepted by UPWC and UPCC (central committee).” Terminology like “federal army” and “ethnic armed group’s revolution” are being accepted by U Aung Min, he said, but it’s still unclear if the army or the UPWC will support them, or what exact points they will support.
The success of the upcoming NCA talks will be dependent on the army and government, Nai Hong Sor told IMNA.
