As part of an on-going investigation into the death of freelance journalist Ko Aung Kyaw Naing aka Ko Par Gyi, local police in Mon State plan to exhume his body on 5th November.
Kyaikmayaw Police Station Sub-Inspector Hlaing Min Thant told Mizzima that the body will be dug up in the presence of the military, the Myanmar National Human Rights Commission, the police, a judge and doctors.
According to an army report, Ko Par Gyi was shot dead by a soldier 4th October while in the custody of Light Infantry Battalion 208. The body is reportedly buried near Shwewarchaung Village, near the army base.
The body will be dug up only in the presence of the all groups on 5th November, but the time has not been fixed, said the police officer.
Ma Thandar, Ko Par Gyi’s wife, said she was informed through Ahlone Police Station on 2nd November that she can come to the place where the body will be dug up.
“They told me to come one day in advance. But I’ll go there only on the day the body will be dug up. The letter does not say what time the body will be dug up,” she said.
Forensic doctors and a township judge will help oversee the exhumation. The police will gather information about the manslaughter case filed with the Kyaikmayaw Police Station, added Sub-Inspector Hlaing Min Thant.
Ma Thandar has been asked to visit the police station on 4th November to ask her questions as part of the investigation, said the police officer.
Some officials from the Myanmar National Human Rights Commission arrived in Mawlamyine on 2nd November in order to conduct their own investigation into Ko Par Gyi’s case.
The Tri-colour group offered food to Buddhist monks at the Thayaktaw Monastery complex in Yangon on 2nd November as part of merit-making for the deceased Ko Par Gyi, who was a member of their group, who were previously bodyguards for Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.
