On September 27th, the Upper Chindwin Youth Network (Youth Network) will stage a demonstration calling for a 24-hour supply of electricity in the Sagaing Region town of Kalaymyo. It will be a peaceful demonstration, and an official permit has already been obtained from the Kalaymyo police station. In its application form, the Youth Network demanded that the main power line in Makui Region’s Gangaw Township be connected with the Kalaymyo Town power line in order to supply 24 hours of electricity a day.
The demonstration will start at 4pm September 27th on Kalaymyo Sachia Road and wind its way along Pinlong–Sanpiah–Bochauh-Weezayata roads, ending in front of the Electric Department office.
Currently, Kalaymyo’s power supply comes from 500 KV and 300 KV transformers, while Zyichuang Hydro-electricity also supplies power to Kalaymyo three hours a day (a total of 8 days per month).
However, the central government has provided two 1250 KV and 500 KV transformers to Kalaymyo Town, which will increase the power supply to five hours per day beginning in the last week of September.
Most Kalaymyo locals obtain their electricity from 57 transformers owned by private suppliers, and from 6-11pm Kalaymyo residents usually use a tube light which costs 3000 kyat per month.
