The drivers of modified cars who race each other on Yangon's streets in the early hours have aroused the ire of a member of the Yangon regional hluttaw.

Dr Nyo Nyo Thin, an independent MP for Bahan Township, said the street racers were a menace and she would be raising the issue in regional parliament.

"This problem has to be tackled by the [regional] Minister for Security and Border Affairs and I will submit the issue to the regional government," she said.

Dr Nyo Nyo Thin said Yangon residents had told her they were worried about the number of sports cars being driven at reckless speeds in the early hours of the morning.

She quoted a resident as saying that the street racers acted with no concern for others and that nothing was being done to stop them.

"They turn the roads into a race track," Dr Nyo Nyo Thin quoted the resident as saying.
