Three villagers - Kyaw Kyaw, Maung Sein and Sane Aung - from Kon-Pyin and Karki village, Paletwa Township, near India-Burma border, were arrested and tortured accusing contact with Chin National Army (CNA) by commanding officer and soldiers from LIB 344 battalion based in Rathedaung, Rakhine State on August 29th, 2014.

“While working in their farmyards, they were arrested and tortured. They were accused giving vegetables to CNA and also allowed to stay in the village. The villagers were tortured and detained after several questions. Following Chin traditional way, villagers offered a pig to soldiers in order to release villagers. But, it’s in vain,” said a villager.

Villagers were asked foodstuff by government army under duress and soldiers stationed at the farmyards. The soldiers have been investigating individuals from Mizoram, who visit Chinlatwa village for shopping, whether they were linked to the CNA.

“The information about army’s investigation was informed by the travelers. If we want to travel inside the country, we need to inform the nearest army post just like normal locals. We’ve put forward this case to senior officers asking how to address it. The army should not bully the ordinary citizens.” Said Capt. Linglaw of CNA.

During peace talks which took place on January 6th, 2012, members of CNF and CNA are allowed traveling without arms inside Burma.

Similarly, on July 20th, platoon commander Capt. Thant Zin Kyaw with his soldiers from LIB-232 suddenly entered into village and physically abused Kan Gyi Aung, the village head. It occurred during the Kwamchaung village festival in Paletwa Township, Chin state.

Villagers condemn ill-treatment of government army for such abuses would damage the peace process between government and CNF. Villagers also urge the authority to address those abuses right away.
