Maungdaw, Arakan State: Burmese soldiers from Marawaddy (Sommonia Village) destroyed Rohingya-owned betel farms on August 24th in Arakan State’s Maungdaw south area, said one of the betel farmers who preferred to remain anonymous.

“On that day, a group of army personnel from Marawaddy camp went to Rohingya-owned betel farms located near a forest and destroyed six farms without giving any reason to the owners. After destroying the farms, they took away bamboo and pieces of wood in cooperation with local Natala villagers.”

Soldiers also arrested and severely beat two Rohingas who were working in the betel farms. The victims were identified as two brothers named Abdu Monaf and Abdul Hamid from Khonja Bill Village, said a local named Mannan.

This past June, army personnel from the army’s Marawaddy out-post also destroyed betel farms owned by Rohingya in Maungdaw south. Another betel farm owner—who spoke on the condition of anonymity—said the army has been destroying betel farms in the area since the third week of June.

“We are very disappointed because we’ve lost everything this year and now we’re poor,” said a village elder who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

“The local authorities have been destroying the property of Rohingya villagers in a systematic way in order to uproot the Rohingya community from Arakan soil by destroying their livelihoods,” said a local youth.

There is no security for Rohingya property in Arakan State, according to a businessman from the area. A local trader further asserted: “This is not the army’s duty. Why are they involved in destroying property owned by Rohingyas in Arakan state?”
