Teknaf, Bangladesh: Heavy rains have been pounding the Burma-Bangladesh border area since July 29th, destroying many shacks at the Leda refugee camp, according to Leda camp resident Kamal Hussain.
"Most refugee shacks at the unregistered Leda camp have been destroyed by the recent heavy rains," he said.
Conditions at the camp looks very bad during this year’s rainy season—with flooding, water falling inside shacks through the ceiling, and the spread of tropical diseases, said camp resident Nawbi Husson.
Ms. Tahera, who has also been living at Leda camp, said: “We aren’t able to stay inside our shacks due to water falling through the ceiling.”
Ms. Tahera added that she has been suffering from a cough and fever for a week and has received treatment from the Muslim Aids clinic.
Refugees at Leda camp said they’ve had difficulty finding adequate shelter since July 29th due to the heavy rain, which has also prevented them from working and now many people are struggling to survive.
Some shacks in Leda camp’s E-block were repaired by Muslim Aids two years ago, but now even those shacks have been totally damaged, according to camp residents.
A member of the E-block committee said that refugees have no choice but to live in old shacks, so he has urgently appealed to Muslim Aids and other iNGOs to build new shacks that can withstand the rainy season.
