Aye Mi Aung –Thanbyuzayat Township’s Mon Youth Organization (MYO) Executive Committee members were re-elected at a meeting on July 6th at Kyun Kayok Monastery in Kyun Kayok Village, located in Mon State’s Thanbyuzayat Township.
More than 100 representatives from 36 villages in Thanbyuzayat Township were present at the meeting, according to Min Zarni Hein, Secretary no. 1 of Thanbyuzayat’s MYO.
“We have only selected secretary no. 1 and secretary no. 2 since [not] every village representative was present [at the meeting]. We will select secretaries 3 and 4 in the last week of July,” stated Min Zarni Hein in an interview with IMNA.
At the moment, only two secretarial positions have been filled, including Min Zarni Hein as secretary no. 1 and Min Aung Chan as secretary no. 2.
Min Zarni Hein noted that villages throughout Thanbyuzayat Township have community-based organizations (CBO) that can organize a voting system of drawing lots to elect two representatives from each village to the Thanbyuzayat’s MYO EC.
Thanbyuzayat Township’s MYO was formed on July 26, 2012 and has around 600 members from 40 villages across the township.
Among the group’s aims are initiatives to help develop and maintain the Mon language and culture; carry out township development; and make preparations for Mon language to be taught in government schools in 40 villages. The Thanbyuzayat Township MYO has also built a network with MYOs in other Mon townships to cooperate on these issues.
After Burma’s 2010 elections, Mon youths in a number of townships have participated in several activities and founded various organizations, including the Mon Youth Forum, the Mon Youth Progressive Association, and the Mon Culture and Literature Committee.
