Members of the Nationwide Ceasefire Coordination Team have begun two days of talks in the Kachin State capital to discuss strategy for their next meeting with government negotiators on a national ceasefire agreement.

The talks are taking place at the Myitkyina office of the Kachin Independence Organisation, one of 16-armed ethnic groups in the NCCT, which is due to meet members of the government’s Union Peace-making Work Committee in Yangon on May 21 and 22.

Dr Lian Sakhong, from the Chin National Front, said the talks had focused on the NCCT’s negotiating position on the 45 points of a 122-point draft ceasefire accord that are yet to be discussed with government negotiators.

“We discussed our stance and which details we wanted to ensure remain within the final agreement,” Dr Lian Sakhong said on May 14.

UPWC vice-chair U Aung Min said on May 4 that the government was prepared to compromise on half the remaining issues.

“If they can compromise on the other half an agreement can be reached,” U Aung Min said, referring to the NCCT.
