A group of Kachin Baptists on a train to Rangoon were pelted with stones last Wednesday while traveling to Burma’s former capital to mark the 200th anniversary of the American missionary Adoniram Judson.

Hkaw Nam, a woman from the N’Jang Dung Kachin Baptist Church in Kachin state capital Myitkyina, sustained head injuries after being hit by stones hurled by unknown attackers near Pyawbwe station in central Burma, said Rev. Lama Yaw from the Kachin Baptist Convention (KBC) office in Myitkyina. The woman sustained an inch long wound on her head. She is seeking medical treatment in Pyawbwe, Lama Ya told the Kachin News Group.

Although railway security staff made a report about the incident, the perpetrators have yet to found, Lama said.  Another train carrying Kachin Baptist travellers was also hit near Mandalay station.

The KBC, which represents over 400,000 ethnic Kachin followers in the country, will celebrate the 200th anniversary of Judson mission to Burma at the Rangoon Kachin Baptist Church in Sanchaung township from December 2-5. The Myanmar Baptist Convention will also mark the anniversary from December 5- 7 with a special program.

According to the KBC office in Myitkyina, over 8,000 people have already registered to join the celebration.  KBC organizers expect more than 10,000 to take part.
