Sommona (Marrawady) police officers arrested a Rohingya villager in the evening of Nov. 11, said Hussain (not his real name). The arrestee has been identified as Ayub, 25; son of Mohamed Nazir, from Khonza Bill village in southern Maungdaw Township, Arakan state.
Ayub was allegedly taken from his home for no reason in plain view of the village administration officer when police patrolled the village, said a relative on condition of anonymity. He was physically and mentally tortured in their police camp where he is now being detained.
Police offered to release Ayub after paying a 300,000 kyat (US$308) bribe, but he couldn’t afford it, according to village sources.
An anonymous police aide source told Kaladan Press Network that a case has been opened, and Ayub has been charged for participating in the 2012 June violence. Many other Rohingya villagers have been sent to jail on similar trumped up charges since last year, the police source said.
