The United Nationalities Federal Council (UNFC) announced on 12 November that it will give its full support to the ethnic armed groups’ Nationwide Ceasefire Coordination Team (NCCT),which is working with the government to establish policies for a nationwide ceasefire.

“Because the NCCT does not have a central office, we are currently drawing up the ceasefire draft,” said Major Khun Okkar, co-secretary of the UNFC. “When it is finished, however, we will consult with the NCCT and seek their approval of it.”

The UNFC has purportedly already passed a preliminary draft to the NCCT, although nothing has been authorized or agreed upon yet.

For fours days during the last week of October, eighteen ethnic armed groups, including the UNFC, gathered in Laiza, Kachin State, to discuss a national ceasefire. The formation of the NCCT, an organization designed to assemble ceasefire policies based on the results of the summit talks, was one of the tangible outcomes of the conference.

After the summit concluded, the UNFC extended its thanks to the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO), the Peace Creation Group (PCG), and the government’s Union Peace-making Work Committee for what it deemed a “successful conference for national unity.”
