High fatality rate along Yangon—Nay Pyi Taw highway

Deputy Police Lieutenant U Soe Win told Mizzima that there have been100 recorded casualties this year on the highway that runs from Yangon to Nay Pyi Taw.

The highway from Yangon to Nay Pyi Taw has been the site of 100 casualties over the past ten months

According to highway police records, from January to the beginning of November there were 219 car accidents that resulted in 100 deaths and 546 injuries.

“Most of the accidents occurred when drivers fell asleep at the wheel or were speeding,” commented U Soe Win. “Car accidents due to mechanical breakdowns were rare.”

Officials have installed two cameras at the locations where the majority of the accidents occurred, although they primarily utilize them to catch speeding drivers.
 
The highway was opened on 25 March 2009. There are fourteen police stations and one police unit’s head office along its route.
