Ko Htut and Bake Kalay from new Dwarawaddy ward of Thandwe township were detained on 18 October by the police, said U Maung Pru, secretary of Thandwe RNDP party.

Another social worker Ko Khin Htun from Dwarawaddy was arrested on 20 October. Similarly Ko Thein Win Oo from the same locality was arrested on 21 October by the police.

“Total 58 Arakanese Buddhists have been arrested suspecting their involvement in the Thandwe violence so far. Among them five detainees were released after preliminary interrogations, as the investing police officers found them not to be guilty. The rest are in police custody till date,” added U Maung Pru.

The central Burmese authority had recently issued a report where it is revealed that 78 persons representing both Buddhist and Muslim communities have been detained by the authority with the suspicion about their involvement with the Thandwe violence.  Among them 34 persons had confessed that they were involved with the incidences of violence in Thandwe.

Four Muslim detainees confessed that they killed two Rakhine individuals in Lin Thee village on 1 October. Similarly two Rakhine Buddhists admitted that they killed five Muslim residents in Shwe Lay village in the time of violence.

Some of the arrestees were produced in the Thandwe court on 17 October. Initially there was news about the torture to the detainees by the police during the interrogation, but later it was reduced drastically, concluded the RNDP party secretary.
